Abstract:
This report describes the progress achived by the programme of improvements to the environment, known as the National Environment Programme. The National Environment Programme is the largest and most far-reaching programme of environmental improvements yet undertaken in England and Wales. It made a significant contribution to the Government's aim of sustainable development. The Programme achieved the nation's targets for river water quality in nearly all cases where existing failures are caused by water companies. These targets are called River Quality Objectives. The programme also controlled the risk of future deterioration which might be caused by water companies, as part of a drive to halve the present length of river failing its River Quality Objectives.
