Abstract:
The National Rivers Authority (NRA) came into being following Royal Assent of the Water Act 1989 on 6 July 1989, taking up its full statutory duties at vesting on 1 September 1989. The appointed role was that of an independent watchdog to regulate water undertakers and protect the aquatic environment. The Authority has statutory duties and powers under the 1991 Water Resources Act for water resources, pollution control, flood defences, fisheries, recreation, conservation and navigation throughout England and Wales. Its water quality and fisheries responsibilities extend into coastal waters. The NRA is also the Competent Authority for twenty European Community Environmental Directives.
