Title: River Parrett : action plan : December 1997
Author: Environment Agency North Wessex Area
Document Type: Monograph
Abstract:
This is the first of the new Local Environment Agency Action Plans produced in North Wessex and represents a significant step forward in tackling environmental issues. It has been clear for many years that the problems of land, air and water, particularly in the realm of pollution control, cannot be adequately addressed individually. They are interdependent, each affecting the others. The creation of the Environment Agency with responsibilities in all three media provided a major opportunity to have an holistic approach which is now reflected in this Action Plan. The Plan sets out the environmental problems of the area in a way which has not been done before, and addresses the issues which have been raised both internally and as a result of public consultation. It is, I believe, vital reading for everyone concerned with the environmental future of North Wessex. The catchment of the River Parrett and its tributaries, the rivers Isle, Yeo, and Cary encompasses a varied and complex environment, and includes a major part of the Somerset Levels and Moors. Here we must strike a balance between the often conflicting interests of all those who live and work in or have an interest in this internationally important area for conservation.
