Abstract:
254 sites were sampled for the presence of cyanobacteria in the South West region of the National Rivers Authority between September 1989 and January 1990. 63 sites (25%) were found to contain cyanobacteria, of these 27 sites (11%) experienced blooms with more than 100 colonies/tal. 16 sites were tested for toxicity using standard mouse toxicity tests. 9 sites (56% of sites tested) were found to be toxic. 300 staff days were spent in the sampling and monitoring of the problem.
