Abstract:
The General Quality Assessment (GQA) scheme for assessing river quality, will be officially launched by the publication of the report The Quality of Rivers and Canals in England and Wales 1990 to 1992. The scheme is non-statutory and will replace the existing National Water Council classification scheme. It will be applied consistently across the whole of the National Rivers Authority and will be used for the 5 yearly national river surveys. From April 1994 reporting of river quality to Head Office will be based on the new GQA classes.
