Title: Salmon and sea trout catch statistics 1988
Author: National Rivers Authority Welsh Region
Document Type: Monograph
Abstract:
Welsh Water continuously published catch data since 1974 and a useful archive of reported catches has continued to accumulate. In September 1989 responsibility for Fisheries passed to the newly formed National Rivers Authority, and this new volume brings the series up to date with 1988 catches for both rods and nets as reported by fishermen. It is stressed that these data can do no more than show the number of fish declared on catch returns and must therefore be treated with some caution. Their greatest value is in helping to identify trends of catches both in particular rivers and through Wales as a whole. Effort data for commercial instruments are included here for the first time. Catch data, as presented here, do not themselves represent the size of the stock of a particular
river. Indeed the relationship between catch and stock is not at all clear and might be expected to vary considerably from river to river and year to year. The total river stock of adults must also include those entering the river after the close of the fishing season. Clearly there can be no catch data for this component of the resource and indeed little is known of its size.
