Abstract:
This report examines the status of spring salmon in the River Wye, the factors affecting their abundance and possible strategies for enhancement. It must be noted that much of the published literature on the sea age of return of Atlantic salmon relates to 1SW and 2SW fish only rather than older age classes and so there is a significant gap in our knowledge which will limit effective management of MSW salmon. Therefore recommendations are put forward to improve our understanding of this stock component to enable robust and effective measures to be taken for their maintenance and improvement.
