Abstract:
A recent increase in the number of complaints from fishermen to NRA regarding fisheating birds, particularly Cormorants, in North West England prompted the work presented in this report. The aims of this project were: to provide estimates of national and North West
NRA regional populations of Cormorants, Goosanders and Red-breasted Mergansers; to describe current distribution patterns and highlight the most important sites; to examine changes in populations and distribution over time; and, to investigate patterns of habitat use. A prediction of likely future trends, and an assessment of the implications of predation by these birds on freshwater fisheries was made, as a first step to investigating the complaints from fishermen.
