Abstract:
The River Wye is the premier salmon river in England and Wales with a long term average annual rod catch of over 3,000 salmon, a high proportion of which are spring fish i.e. fish caught before the 1 st May. Over the past 20 years or so there has been a decline in the numbers and proportion of spring salmon in the catch, a phenomenon which has been observed throughout the North Atlantic range of the salmon. This report examines the pattern of spring salmon abundance on the River Wye and other rivers and the factors influencing their status. These include marine and freshwater environmental factors, exploitation in both distant and homewater fisheries and the role of genetics in determining sea absence.
