Title: Flood defence and land drainage : a guide for people living near rivers and streams, including land drainage byelaws
Author: National Rivers Authority Thames Region
Document Type: Monograph
Abstract:
This booklet explains how the rules affect you, and how you and the NRA can work together to protect the working and natural environment of our rivers and streams. It also contains, for reference, the Land Drainage Bye-Laws which are applicable throughout the Thames Region o f the NRA which are printed in full, and which cover watercourses known as main rivers. All watercourses are covered by the Land Drainage Act 1976. As well as the bye-laws administered by the NRA, there are other rules affecting riparian owners. Some London Boroughs and other local authorities have their own bye-laws saying what you can and cant do near the river - you can get these from your local authority. The information that follows is intended to provide an introductory guide for riparian owners to some of the rules and restrictions governing the use o f their property. It must, however, be appreciated that the actual interpretation o f the byelaws in any given situation would in the final event be a matter for the courts.
