Title: Water resources planning : Deben groundwater unit water resources management plan
Author: Andy Turner
Document Type: Monograph
Abstract:
The Deben Groundwater Unit (Figure 1) includes the River Deben (7/35/6), the surface catchments of the Fynn an Lark (7/35/7) and part of the Felixstowe Peninsula (7/35/10). Whilst the Groundwater Unit forms the area of study for the Water Resources Management Plan, it should be noted that the area is greater in its extent than the area of study associated with the River Deben Alleviation of Low Flows (ALF) project. The Chalk is the main aquifer, with overlying Crag also important in local areas. The Deben is the principal river. Its flows have been gauged since 1964 at Naunton Hall. They are relatively flashy as a consequence of heavy boulder clay cover and limited direct interaction with the aquifers, especially in the headwaters. This gives a comparatively low baseflow index of 0.36 (Ref 1) and results in naturally low flows during dry conditions. The main uses of water in the Unit are for public water supply, and for spray irrigation.
