Title: An assessment of water quality in the River Yarty catchment
Author: T.R. Geatches
Document Type: Monograph
Abstract:
This investigation and report was under taken by staff of the Freshwater Investigations Team and Task Force. A Warden and Pollution Inspector provided background information on pollution
problems in the catchment. Routine water quality monitoring in the River Yarty has identified noncompliance with quality standards specified in the EC Freshwater Fish directive and the National Water Council classification system during 1990. Chemical and biological surveys were carried out during December 1991 to determine the cause of poor water quality and to determine the general water quality status throughout the catchment. Biological samples were collected at 42 sites and grouped according to their similarity. Four sites were classed as significantly polluted, 22 as slightly
polluted, 8 as unpolluted and 8 did not fall into any clear grouping.
