Abstract:
Many of the low lying areas of England and Wales are currently protected from salt water inundation
by artificially maintained sea or tidal defence structures. A significant proportion of Britain’s richest
coastal ecological sites are also situated in these low lying areas, either to the seaward side of the
defences, or immediately behind them.
Current concerns over the extent and significance of past coastal habitat losses due to development,
and the possible future losses under a scenario of climate change and sea level rise, combine to
demonstrate the need to promote the restoration or creation of sites of nature conservation interest in
Britain’s coastal zone.
This report demonstrates that significant opportunities for environmental enhancement of this nature
might arise if a retreat from the existing line of flood defence is accepted as an option.
