Title: The quality of rivers and canals in England and Wales (1990 to 1992) : as assessed by a new general quality assessment scheme : report of the National Rivers Authority
Author: National Rivers Authority
Document Type: Monograph
Abstract:
In December 1991 the NRA published the results of the 1990 Survey of water quality in England and Wales, in which the quality of rivers and canals was reported according to the National Water Council (NWC) classification scheme. That survey was the last to use the NWC system and a new approach to classification, called the General Quality Assessment.(GQA) Scheme has been developed and introduced by the NRA to replace it. The principal purpose of this report is to introduce the basic chemistry component of the new GQA Scheme for rivers and canals and to apply it for the first time in making an assessment of river water quality across England and Wales for the years 1988 to 1990 and 1991 to 1992. This will provide a baseline against which the results of future surveys can be compared. The report also includes, in its appendices, an analysis of the means by which the basic biological status of rivers could be assessed in the future.
