Abstract:
This manual is intended as an overview of habitat restoration specifically for Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar). It is concerned principally with physical factors within and immediately adjacent to stream environments which can be readily altered to enhance poor or degraded salmon habitat. The manual is based primarily on a detailed literature review of both published and un-published information, summarising the main points and key messages. For more detail on specific issues, the Reference section provides a comprehensive list of literature sources. Examples of habitat restoration methodologies have been presented and the likely impacts on salmon population dynamics anticipated where possible. The overall-objective is to advise on best practice as it is currently perceived. However, habitat restoration in the UK is a rapidly evolving discipline, and hence the manual has been constructed in a format to facilitate updating as new information comes to light. Therefore it is important to stress that it is presented as a working document which will evolve and become refined as the restoration techniques described herein are developed.
