Abstract:
The purpose of this Manual is to provide Environment Agency personnel with information to enable them to take effective and safe action to ameliorate the effects of water pollution by a range of hazardous chemicals. In the first instance, the range of chemicals covered by the Manual has been limited to: - Chlorinated solvents - Timber treatment chemicals - Cyanide - Ammonia These chemicals have been identified by the Agency as ones which have been frequently found to give rise to pollution problems, and for which the impact might be lessened by the implementation of appropriate amelioration techniques. The amelioration techniques proposed are intended to reduce the concentration of the contaminant in rivers, lakes, streams or discharges to acceptable levels, thereby minimising the environmental damage which might otherwise have been caused if no action had been taken.
