Title: Creating a better Thames : our five year plan 2006-2011
Author: Environment Agency
Document Type: Monograph
Abstract:
The London Olympics in 2012 will create a showcase of the Lower Lea for the world. This is a huge opportunity to revitalise a deprived area and create a better place for the local community and visitors. The Environment Agency wants to see this happen through a high quality environment and green spaces focused on the river network that allows people and wildlife to flourish. EA will make sure it takes every opportunity to improve the environment as it works with local and regional organisations in bringing the games to the area. London produces approximately 19 million tonnes of waste every year. It currently sends approximately 70 per cent of its municipal waste to landfill sites. The growth of housing and development in the area will mean that by 2020, London will need up to 330 new waste management facilities to manage its waste.
