Abstract:
During August 1997 an Electric Fishing Survey was carried out on the River Avon Catchment in which 28 sites were monitored. The strategic fisheries surveys undertaken by the Devon Area Fisheries Science Team provide an indication of the general health of the fishery and highlights areas of juvenile production. The 1997 Avon Fisheries Survey concluded that salmon fry distribution and abundance had generally increased since 1994. Salmon are now regularly spawning in the Avon and Badworthy Brook upstream of South Brent. Salmon parr abundance was generally similar to that recorded in the 1994 survey. In 1995 adult salmon managed to access the Knapmill Brook. The distribution of trout fry was widespread and their abundance was greater than that recorded in 1994. The distribution of parr and larger trout is consistent with that observed in previous surveys.
