Title: Electron Microscope Image: Asterionella parasitised by Chytrid microfungus
Description: Depiction: Scanning electron micrograph showing Chytrid microfungus parasitising the diatom Asterionella formosa. The micrograph also shows a small bacteria parasitising the Chytrid. Small spines are visible on the valve margins of Asterionella formosa.
Size of Recorded Feature: Chytrid size: 1.8- 2.0 micrometres and bacteria cell: 0.5 micrometres.
General Habitat: Freshwater habitat.
Trophic Status: Asterionella formosa is an autotrophe organism and both Chytrid and bacteria are parasites.
Context: Image shows typical form.
Preparation: Critical-point dried material sputtered with gold for scanning electron microscopy.
