Title: Report on two electrofishing surveys carried out between July 10-25 1978 and July 9-12 1979 on the proposed Kielder Water

Abstract:
The construction of the Kielder water scheme meant that approximately 436 km of river system (River Tyne) have been separated from the main N. Tyne by the Kielder reservoir. The fish in this river system have access to the reservoir, but the absence of a fish pass means that they will not easily be able to move downstream of the dam and that the fish from below the dam will be precluded from moving upstream of the reservoir. This prevention of movement is of most import to migratory fish species such as the salmon (Salmo salar) and the sea trout (Salmo trutta), since the adult fish will be prevented from using any spawning grounds above the dam, and any immature fish present in these waters will be hindered in moving downstream to the sea to complete their life cycle. To compensate for the effect on these fish species the N.W.A. (Northumbrian Water Authority) has built a fish hatchery at Kielder to rear juvenile sea trout and salmon for release into the N. Tyne below the dam. The report focuses on two electrofishing surveys that were carried out in the vicinity of the proposed Kielder Water in July 1978 and 1979.
