Abstract:
This report focuses on Phase 3 of the River Communities Project. In October 1977 a team of freshwater biologists was brought together at the Freshwater Biological Association (FBA) River Laboratory, Wareham to undertake Phase 1 (1977-1981) of what became known as the 'River Communities Project'. The research programme, jointly sponsored by the Natural Environment Research Council and the Central Water Planning Unit (later incorporated into the Department of the Environment), had two major objectives: i) to develop a biological classification of unpolluted running-water sites in Great Britain based on the macroinvertebrate fauna, and ii) to assess whether the type of macroinvertebrate community to be expected at a site could be predicted using physical and chemical features. The Phase 2 programme (October 1981-March 1984) had three further objectives: 1) enlargement of the scope of the classification, ii) refinement of the correlations between environmental features and biological groupings, and iii) testing exercises, including the prediction of species. The overall objective of Phase 3 is to produce a biological classification of running-water sites on British rivers, together with a procedure for prediction of the invertebrate fauna from environmental variables, for use as a practical system in river management.
