Abstract:
In an earlier report observations were presented about the available strategies for upgrading the Whitacre-Shustoke Reservoir System with particular reference to interests of maintaining a high quality of stored-water. One of these included the operation of the Lower Shustoke Reservoir as a standing reserve in the event of the Bourne and Blythe rivers failing to meet the direct abstraction requirements. Moreover, to counter the potential development of large algal crops in the highly fertile river water during its (long) storage in the reservoir, it was indicated desirable to 'strip' the inflowing water of its phosphorus content prior to storage. However, to attain a significant and lasting improvement, it was also argued that removal of P would have to be 99% complete and that the capacity of the surface sediment to maintain, albeit temporarily, a phosphorus load on to the P-stripped water should be carefully defined. In direct response to the client's requirements, the present report attempts to predict the role of the sediment phosphorus-content in a P-stripped reservoir.
