Chironomid Pupal Exuviae TechniqueDefinition (http://www.ecrc.ucl.ac.uk/?q=courses/chironomids-water-quality-and-climate-change) Chironomid (non-biting) midges are sensitive indicators of environmental change. They are responsive to a wide range of environmental perturbations including eutrophication, acidification, heavy metal pollution and climate change.
Chironomid pupal exuviae can be used to monitor the water quality of lakes and rivers and chironomid larvae, preserved in lake sediments, can be used to make quantitative reconstructions of palaeoenvironmental change.
